===== COMPOUND WORDS =====

Compound words are very frequent in Neo. They are formed by simple joining, but a hyphen can always be used to help the reader who is new to Neo, and when the resulting compound word seems too long:

When writing compound words, it is suggested, as soon as the word seems too long, or as soon as there is a danger of confusion, we separate the composing words with a hyphen: [b]skol-maestro[/b], [b]art-istor[/b], [b]dorfo-klezo[/b], [b]menso-car[/b].

[i]Compound words have two or more stresses[/i], each composing word keeping its own stress: [b]d[u]ó[/u]rfokl[u]é[/u]zo[/b], [b][u]á[/u]rt-ist[u]ó[/u]r-sk[u]ó[/u]l[/b], [b]sk[u]ó[/u]lma[u]é[/u]stro[/b].

English compound words as “[i]cigarette-holder[/i]”, “[i]cross-bearer[/i]”, “[i]pen-holder[/i]”, “[i]pen-wiper[/i]”, “[i]windscreen-wiper[/i]” are translate in Neo either directly (with [b]-er[/b] for a person, [b]-il[/b] for a tool): [b]sigaret-portil[/b] ([b]sigaretil[/b]), [b]kruz-porter[/b], [b]plum-tenil[/b], [b]plum-shugil[/b], [b]vitrel-shugil[/b], or by using the infinitive: [b]porti-sigaret[/b], [b]portikruz[/b], [b]teniplum[/b] ([b]plumil[/b]), [b]shugiplum[/b], [b]shugivitrel[/b].

The English idiom “[i]from day to day[/i]”, “[i]from year to year[/i]”, and so on, is shrunk in Neo to single words comprising the initial syllable and the whole word: [b]idide[/b] from day to day, [b]ananye[/b] from year to year, [b]vekveke[/b] from week to week, [b]benbene[/b] better and better, [b]malpize[/b] from bad to worse.

This useful device can be extended to adjectival (ending [b]-a[/b]) and to verbal (ending [b]-i[/b], etc.) usage: [b]letleta[/b] smaller and smaller; [b]letleti[/b] to become smaller and smaller; [b]ladlada[/b] uglier and uglier; [b]oldoldi[/b] to grow older and older.

The idioms “[i]black-haired girl[/i]”, “[i]the with the gray glove[/i]”, “[i]the woman with the green gown[/i]” are also translated by a compound word: [b]lo nerkapla fel[/b], [b]lo grizganta vir[/b], [b]lo verdroba dam[/b].
